Reviewing Origami Books - Michael G Lafosse

This section introduces you to the works of Michael G Lafosse. Although Michael is well known in the origami world, not all his works are directly related to origami. The books below by Michael is on paper craft rather than origami.

As I am no origami purist and try out all kinds of papercraft without any inhibition on using cutting and glueing, personally I find the books worthwhile.

Michael's website is at: Origamido.

Whenever there is a link, such books can be purchase at AMAZON.com or at FASCINATING-FOLDS.com. If there is no link, they can only be purchased at FASCINATING-FOLDS.com.

Origamido

Skill Level: Not Required

This is not an origami book where it teaches you how to fold although there are instructions to a few models including the action kissing lips.

I did a review of this on AMAZON.com as below. Check out the opinion of others as well.

"When I first bought this book, my first thought was it was way too expensive but after going through the book, the only word that could describe it adequately was "WOW!".

It was certainly worth the money. I like it so much that I ordered another 2 more books.

Why? The photos are breath taking. Now it makes it very easy for me to answer what can you fold in origami. It makes it very easy for me to show that origami is not 'kid's stuff' but a serious art form. My additional copies will be brought to future origami exhibitions to show to visitors. I cannot bring the first one as it was signed by the author himself.

The depth and scope covered by the book shows the depth and scope of origami. Do not expect to learn origami through folding from the book. Expect to be brought spellbound into the beautiful world of origami.

It is definitely a collector's item."

Paper Art: The Art of Sculpting with Paper

Skill Level: Simple to Advanced

This is not a book on origami but it is definitely a book on paper craft. There are some simple origami models within. There is a section on making paper yourself. Paper dolls are also taught.

Although I had not reviewed this book on AMAZON.com, reviewers had given it top marks and I fully agree with this assessment.

A definitely "must-get" book if you are not an origami purist and do not mind the cutting and glueing.

Make it with Paper: Paper Boxes

Skill Level: Simple to Intermediate

This is not a book on origami boxes but it is definitely a book on making paper boxes. There are a lot of folding that goes into making the box. Look at the picture on the left and you will know which of the 8 boxes are. The rest of the book consists of templates you can use.

I had not reviewed this book on AMAZON.com but other reviewers had given it top marks.

Whether you like this book depends on whether you prefer Tomoko Fuse's folded boxes to these that are cut out and folded. Generally, I find the change refreshing and would use these boxes as alternatives to Fuse's boxes. Each has their own charm.

Make it with Paper: Paper Flowers

Skill Level: Simple to Intermediate

This is not a book on origami flowers but it is definitely on making paper flowers. Look at the picture on the left and you will know which of the 8 flowers are. The rest of the book consists of templates you can use.

I had not reviewed this book on AMAZON.com but other reviewers had given it top marks.

I love making flowers irregardless of the medium. I generally prefer using paper but other medium are also acceptable. There is the "cut and paste" and origami purist will not like it. I find it acceptable, as I do not claim it as origami.

As you can see for yourself, the flowers are just exquisite.

Strongly recommended if you like making flowers especially if you do not mind cutting and glueing.

Make it with Paper: Paper Animals

Skill Level: Simple to Intermediate

This is not a book on origami animals but it is definitely on making paper animals. Look at the picture on the left and you will know which of the 8 animals are. The rest of the book consists of templates you can use.

Look closely at the fish or koi. It is so realistic!

The lizard can be called an action model since its body and legs can be moved realistically like a lizard.

Only the bat is an origami bat but it is a compound model and again origami purist might not like it. It makes no difference to me since I first learned my origami models from Isao Honda's book.

I have a few books on this kind of paper craft and this book is among the best.

Other than the above 3 books of "Make it with Paper" series, there are others in the same series. Another series "Kids' Guide to Origami" is on the way.
