Reviewing Origami Books - Nov 2001

Origami Dream World by Toshikazu Kawasaki

Japanese text
Skill Level: Simple to Complex

The train you see on the cover looks pretty impressive. This was the main attraction to me. I was rather disappointed by the folding sequences because it consists of a lot of individual pieces that need to be fitted together. As I was put off by the folding sequence, I have no idea whether glueing would be required to hold everything together but it does not appear to be so.

Other than the train and tracks, there are other models such as the space shuttle, snowflake designs, a very interesting looking fox, various kusudamas, underwater creatures (scenes, squid, shells) and not forgetting the mandatory Kawasaki roses (old and new).

It is quite difficult for me to decide whether I like this book or not. I got my train. I love folding roses and yes, I have the other book by Kawasaki too. So I decide not to rate this book.

Skill Level: Intermediate to Complex

One more of the eagerly awaited series. This series usually have a few super complex models, eagerly awaited by enthusiasts who love super complex models. Unfortunately I am not one of them.

I like this series too as there are many gems in each one of the book.

Let me list a few models within: Angel playing lute, snow crystals patterns, modulars, propeller plane, skydiving,  F117, stage, boxes, tortoises, strawberry, hydrangea, "People from outer space", UFO, armored mechanical dinosaur, unicorn, tylosaurus, T-Rex, pteranodon,  megalosaurus, apatosaurus, orangutan, Japanese macaque, bull, duck, fox, snail, mantis, septagonal ring, centaur, stag beetle and many others. Note that these models have detailed digits.

Models that attracted my attention include propeller plane, a rather menacing-looking alien from outer space and a rather sly looking fox. There are a number of modulars that caught my attention too.

In all, this Volume 7 lives up to the reputation of all the previous volumes. A strongly recommended buy.
